Karhu

A pioneer in sneaker fashion and long-distance running shoes, Karhu was founded in a small Helsinki workshop in 1916. The next 100+ years have been filled with incredible yet true stories.

Adi Dassler purchased the "Three Stripes" trademark from Karhu shortly after the 1952 Helsinki Olympics for what today would be just €1,600 and two bottles of whiskey.

Karhu’s ChampionAir was the first running shoe with an air cushion system in the late 1970s—at a time when Nike, now synonymous with air cushioning, was just getting off the ground. By 1984, over a million pairs had been sold. Today, the same air cushion technology can be found in highly sought-after reissue models.

Karhu’s Fulcrum technology, designed for an efficient stride, is a patented innovation developed through extensive research collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä.

Whether it’s a 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s sneaker profile, Karhu’s sneakers are known, recognized, and respected worldwide. Wearing them means carrying not just the heritage of a century-old shoemaker but becoming part of a remarkable story—one that outshines nearly every other sneaker brand.
