Birkenstocks are always a statement—and they always have been. Back in 1990, punk legends NOFX released the track "Jeff Wears Birkenstocks?" The song was inspired by Jeff Abarta, an employee at Epitaph Records, who stood out from his punk-era peers by rocking Birkenstocks instead of combat boots. He stuck to his style despite the band's playful teasing, and if anything, that’s as punk as it gets.
