In Japan, the term kacho fugetsu refers to the connection with the beauty of nature—nature where the hand of humans is not visible. Kacho fugetsu is an inseparable part of traditional Japanese society and its aesthetics. It also forms the foundation of Snow Peak, a Japanese outdoor and camping brand.
Snow Peak was founded in 1958 in Niigata Prefecture, an area known for its iconic snow-capped mountains. The founder, Yukio Yamai, discovered the unifying significance of mountaineering, seen as a way to ward off all kinds of evil. Initially, Snow Peak focused on creating technically superior mountaineering gear.
In the early 1980s, the founder’s son, Tohru Yamai, was introduced to car camping in the U.S. as a high school exchange student, and Snow Peak became a pioneer in that field—still with the mission of bringing people closer to nature and one another, away from everyday routines.
Tohru’s daughter, Lisa Yamai, founded Snow Peak Apparel, with a deep meaning of bridging life in hyper-urban cities like Tokyo with the untouched beauty of nature. Snow Peak's story continues by connecting people to each other, nature, and ultimately, to their own souls.
