GX1000 is more than a skate brand—it’s a tribute to an era, a style, and the camera that shaped it all.
Created by Thrasher’s in-house videographer Ryan Garshell, GX1000 channels the raw, unfiltered aesthetic of 1990s skateboarding. But to truly understand what GX1000 is about, you need to know the story behind its namesake: the Sony VX1000.
Released in 1995, the VX1000 was the first consumer-grade camera to bring pro-level digital video to the masses. It wasn’t cheap, but it quickly became a staple in skateboarding. With its ergonomic top handle, high-quality microphones, and iconic color saturation, it felt made for capturing skate footage from that perfect low-angle shot.
Paired with a Century fisheye lens, the VX1000 defined the look of skate videos—an aesthetic so timeless that skaters still chase it today. And just like the VX1000, GX1000 carries that same energy forward, keeping the spirit of raw, fast, and fearless skating alive.
